by Márton Egri (basset clarinet),
Capella Savaria, Authentic Quartet (on period instruments)
Our recording presents two late masterpieces that stand out prominently even among the extensive corpus of Mozart’s compositions. These pieces are connected by the solo instrument, namely the basset clarinet.
No original 18th-century instrument has survived to the present day. However, in 1992, English researcher Pamela Poulin discovered a concert programme from 1794 which documented Anton Stadler’s performance in Riga.
Among other things, the document shows a drawing of the basset clarinet used by Stadler. This drawing formed the basis of the reconstructed basset clarinet used in this recording. The instrument was manufactured in the workshop of Rudolf Tutz Jr. in Innsbruck.
